P.Elmar Salmann, geboren 1948, Studium der Theologie und Philosophie und Literatur in Paderborn, Wien und Münster, 1972 Priesterweihe, dann Benediktiner von Gerleve, 8 Jahre in lebensbegleitender Seelsorge, daneben Doktorat über ein Thema zur Theologie und Psychologie der Mystik. 1981-2 – 2012 Professor für Systematische Philosophie und Theologie in Rom, seitdem wieder in der Seelsorge und Kulturarbeit. Schwerpunkte: die Moderne und das Christentum, Psychologische Erfahrung und Gnade/Glaube, Demokratie und Gottesgedanke, Symbole, Ritus, Mystik und Kultur.

P. Elmar Salmann, born in 1948, studies in literature, philosophy and theology, ordination in 1972, then Benedictine, work in biographical accompaniment and in the care of souls, doctorate on a theme that concerns the connection between psychology and theology of the Mystic; from 1981-2 until 2012 Professor of Philosophy and Systematic Theology at two Roman Universities. Now again in pastoral and cultural work. He is interested in the connection between modernity and Christianity, democracy and the Trinitarian God, experience and grace-faith; between culture and the world of symbols, ritual, mysticism.

Der Vortrag möchte die Einsamkeit zunächst positiv verstehen, als Reichtum und Einmaligkeit eines jeden Menschen, der mit sich eins und einsam, ins Eine versammelt ist. Jedes Selbst ist eine Welt und zugleich Zentrum seiner Weltsicht. Das zu fördern, ist Ziel und Mitte aller seelsorglichen und psychologischen Begleitung. Zugleich liegt in dieser unvergleichlichen Besonderheit auch der Grund für den Schatten der Einsamkeit. Menschen können sich selbst und einander nie ganz verstehen, können und sollen aber versuchen, einander zugewandt, hilfreich gegenwärtig, also gemeinsam einsam zu sein.

Every human being is a universe - and (therefore) completely alone 

The lecture wants first to understand loneliness positively, as richness and uniqueness of each person, who is one and alone, united into the One. Every self is a world and at the same time the centre of its view of the world. To promote this is the goal and centre of all pastoral and psychological accompaniment. At the same time lies in this incomparable peculiarity the reason for the shadow of loneliness. People can never completely understand themselves and each other, but they can and should try to face each other, to be helpfully present, thus to be alone together.
